Rose early today, to drive up to the mountain village of Konso; extremely tricky to arrange a guide on Sun. but were somehow successful. Konso is the gateway into the lower Omo Valley; perhaps a small taste of what could be expected if we were able to take the time to go deeper into the valley. The village of Konso was Peter Panesque, built into the mountain terraces, I could picture the lost boys swinging through the trees and running through the tree-woven doorways and entrances. In fact, the children of the village were almost perfect examples of Lost Boys, as they chased after us screaming for money and plastic water bottles, stopping mid stride to pose with knees bent and fists outstretched. We were told that the village is constructed of a series of high rock walls due to the violent nature of the people and nearby tribes. Within these walls are a series of mountain tukuls and an intricate framework of woven walls, doors and archways. The women wear beautiful double layered skirts which boast a top layer of ruffles frilling out below the waist and a final layer of ruffles near the ankles. We were again attacked by crazy children and photography was found to be quite difficult to nearly impossible. The trip probably took 6-7 hours and we returned to Arba Minch for q quick lunch stop before heading to the village of Dorze.
